A Fourth of July Weekend Adventure

· California

For the past month, I’ve been working hard in Monterey, California in an intensive Chinese program, but fourth of July weekend we were given a long weekend. I hitched a ride with friends down to San Diego, who thankfully showed me a very good time.

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve

Located in the city limits, this beautiful park makes for a great day out. If you’re debating about whether to go hiking or spend a day at the beach, this has both, making everyone happy. Open daily from 7:15am to sunset (see site for more visiting information), this park is home to the Torrey Pine, the rarest pine tree in North America. We hiked from the beach parking lot to the top, and also did part of the Guy Fleming Trail, which has an amazing overlook of the beach. When you get to the top, stop by the lodge for some information about the Torrey pine, geology of the area, and animals native to the park. When you’re done hiking, make your way down the beach trail, for a relaxing reward walk along the sandy shore.

Roberto’s Very Mexican Food

After a hike, and possibly a swim, the hunger hits, so a great place to stop near Torrey Pines is Roberto’s Very Mexican Food. I tried the California burrito here and it made my day. Steak, fries, cheese, and sour cream, plus added guacamole and Salsa Fresca make for an exceptional meal.
