Markets of Melbourne

A look at the city's many markets

· Australia,Markets

A city like Melbourne, land of foodie culture and well-crafted cocktails, is also bound to be a place with many markets. And with so many, it's little wonder I've only managed to hit a few of them in my time here. For a full list of daily markets check out OnlyMelbourne's page here.

South Melbourne Market

Website: http://www.southmelbournemarket.com.au/

Hours: Wednesday: 8am-4pm, Friday: 8am-5pm, Saturday/Sunday: 8am-4pm

Location: 322-326 Coventry Street, South Melbourne 3205, several tram routes go here, so it's easy to access

The market has a great mix of cooking items, restaurants, and clothes. The inner area is lined with lots of delis and bakeries, while the outer street front has the produce stands and cafes. If you're looking for a bite to eat check out the Cecil Street side, where there's plenty of options.

Queen Victoria Market

Website: http://www.qvm.com.au/

Hours: Open Tuesdays & Thursdays-Sundays, hours vary between upper/lower markets. See here for details.

Location: Corner of Elizabeth & Victoria Streets in the CBD

This market is divided into two main parts. The lower market consists of open air sheds, where the produce vendors set up shop. If you come later in the day, some stalls start lowering their prices, trying to unload as much as possible before closing time. The upper market is indoors and features delis, bakeries, seafood, and a small food court.
